India charging network to get boost from M&M partnership
New JV will see 1,100 chargers rolled out in key emerging Indian market
Indian auto manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Adani TotalEnergies E-Mobility Limited (Atel) to create an EV charging infrastructure in India.
The partnership is looking to roll out 1,100 chargers over the next few years.
“This alliance is a cornerstone in enhancing the EV charging infrastructure, ensuring our customers enjoy seamless access to charging network and digital integration for an unparalleled EV experience,” says Veejay Nakra president of M&M’s automotive division.
Adani TotalEnergies is a JV between Indian conglomerate Adani and French oil major TotalEnergies formed to develop renewable power projects in India.
Atel is already developing a network of 200 EV charging points in the Delhi area. The firm also operates networks around Udaipur and in a handful of other Indian cities.
M&M sells a range of ICE and e-SUVs in India. The firm sold over 250,000 SUVs in 2023 and aims to achieve a 20-30pc mix of BEVs in its total sales by later this decade.
India currently has just over 12,000 EV charging stations.
The country will need at least 1.32mn stations by 2030 to facilitate the rapid adoption of EVs, according to a report released by the Confederation of Indian Industry last year.
The report projected that approximately 106mn EVs will be sold every year by 2030.
